Almirah Design

Early Almirah design were simply raw wood log assemblies with no ornamental polish or ornamentation. Surface embellishment included iron or bronze hardware such as hinges, spikes, nails, and locks. Egyptian Canopic chests are cases used to store internal organs extracted during the mummification process. These chests, as well as a later walk-in cabinet-like shape, were tall wooden shrine-like structures. These were fashioned of wood, gesso-coated, and vividly painted. In the lack of superior wood surface finishing technologies, the painted wood style persisted for several decades. Gilding is frequently used to adorn corners and bevels. Landscapes were painted on flat surfaces. Painted wood surfaces did not endure long. As a result, the focus shifted to using high-quality wood and carving it. Woods were investigated for grain arrangement or natural patterns.
